My first job after graduating college was at a screen-printing factory called (redacted). I had the idea that I was going to become some Shepherd Fairy type t-shirt designer after watching Exit through the Gift Shop in art school, so I figured I should gain some real experience on the production floor. I did learn some things.

I worked the swing shift, 3 in the afternoon until 11:30 at night. My title was “Press Operator’s Assistant,” which meant that I had to pull shirts off the press and put them on a conveyor belt to dry. They spray an adhesive th prevents the shirts from moving around, so you had to pull on them to come off. If you made a mistake, the ink would get on the shirt and ruin it. The machines moved super-fast. I had to remove a shirt once every 2 seconds, twisting my body in this weird jerking motion to get it on the conveyor belt and back in time to grab the next shirt. I was bad at it.
